Seamus is a big beautiful boy who was in our adoption program and we made the mistake of going against our instincts and allowing him to go to a home with cats. We knew Seamus had shown a propensity for getting excited when he saw one of the feral cats on our place, but there was always a fence between Seamus and any cat, so we didn't have to worry about the safety of our feral cats, who generally have the good sense to stay away from areas where we have dogs. (We have two pastures where there are livestock but no dogs, so the cats have several acres to live in safety.) But this was an adopter with experience with Akbash dogs, and they assured us they could manage Seamus to be sure he didn't have access to their cats. Unfortunately, their plan to manage him didn't work out, and he tried to attack one of their cats. As they tried to protect the cat, they got bitten, so they returned Seamus to us.
We really feel like in the right environment, Seamus could be a great addition to the family. We have not had any trouble with him here at our place. But in an abundance of caution, we decided to make him a sanctuary dog, meaning he will live out his days with us at Windsong Ranch. He loves playtime in one of our big fenced yards, and his favorite playmate is a female dog who is similar size and personality. They each think they should be boss over everything, and they seem to respect each other as equals.
If you love Akbash dogs and would like to support Seamus's care, we would be glad to have your sponsorship donations. Click on the links under Seamus's photo to read more about sponsorship and to set up a one-time or recurring donation. Thank you!
