In the early months of 2019, an animal lover saw Blizzard tied to a tree, where he had virtually no shelter. He was there day in/day out, 24/7, all day/every day. There's a photo below -- Blizzard is the white lump huddled up against the tree trunk, and that white "sail" was his only protection in the beginning. Later, his owner put up a pup tent of sorts, but it didn't provide much more shelter.  He was in the middle of a pasture, tethered to the tree, and yet he was supposed to protect a herd of goats from coyotes. The animal lover was finally able to convince the owner to surrender Blizzard to Bluebonnet Animal Rescue Network.

Since coming to Windsong Ranch, Blizzard has enjoyed the freedom of going wherever he wants, with no tether limiting his movements. We have learned that he is afraid of thunder and other similar loud noises. It must have been so scary for him being tied to that tree during thunderstorms, with no real shelter to protect him from wind, rain, and hail.

Blizzard is amazingly sweet and affectionate with everyone he meets. He gets along well with other dogs, and seems to ignore the barn cats. He is safe with goats and sheep, and seems to understand that it's best to steer clear of the longhorns who share one pasture where he spends time. We haven't tested him with our chickens yet.

Blizzard enjoys the freedom to move around, and seems happiest napping in the shade rather than napping inside the house. He likes going to the front gate to greet visitors, but he has kept a respectful distance when we open the gate, not trying to rush out.  We think he would be happiest on a small homestead where he has a couple of securely fenced acres, and a nice covered porch from which to survey it. It's hard to say whether it's important to Blizzard to feel like he has a job -- he hasn't been the type to hang out with our goats the way some working dogs do.  Even though he's a mature dog, he will occasionally engage in play with another LGD. I could see him being completely happy if his only job might be to protect the family and maybe the smaller dogs in the home.

If Blizzard sounds like the dog of your dreams, please complete the adoption application on our website at www.bluebonnetrescue.org.
